The first volume of Shaman King is not entirely successful in its execution, but it does develop Manta and Amidamaru and their relationship. The story does also make the reader curious as to what Manta will become, and the reader is eager to find out. However, the book is also far too long and seems to drag on with the addition of the spirit world. Also, a better execution of the characters' relationships would have been helpful. The story is also rather confusing as the story and plot do not always follow the same flow, and the characters' development can be slow and often frustrating.
This volume of Shaman King explores the influence of jade on the modern world. On Earth, the Jade Emperor has created a world of chaos and strife through the actions of various spirits who have caused Yoh, Amidamaru and Manta to enter the world. Yoh, Manta and Amidamaru have completed their journey through the underworld and are now in the world of living beings. As a result, Yoh and Amidamaru will have to take on the world's problems as part of their quest to free mankind. Meanwhile, Manta has remained in the underworld and is becoming increasingly curious of the world above. Meanwhile, Yoh, Amidamaru and Manta search for Yoh's missing father, who is the only one with the necessary knowledge to heal the spirit realm. As the first volume is not a completely successful one, Harper Collins decided not to continue with the series.[180]
