In this book, I will use the terms zine and zine-like to mean any printable media that is comprised of a single or several sheets that is typically made of paper and printed on one or more sides. These items include photocopied, printed, and hand-drawn zines; posters; flyers; two-sided magazines; and portfolios. These items are used in tandem with the term zine as a descriptor for the expression of ideologies, interests, and opinions that can be seen in the pages. This book is not a comprehensive reference, but it does collect the most influential and important zines that have been produced over the past twenty-five years.
In addition to zines, other similar projects include journals and magazine reviews. More relevant to this book are the mini-magazines or the zine-related publications that have been created as a result of the zine movement. These can be literary works, art projects, performance presentations, or other forms of creative self-expression that are meant to be published and distributed in a similar fashion as a zine. These are not to be confused with the established fanzines, which are usually published on an intermittent basis and are often created for the purpose of collecting material for a fanzine. Like zines, fanzines can be distributed informally, but they are not typically offered for sale. They are usually distributed by mail, in various types of boxes, or on doorsteps.
Zines are a type of self-published or independently produced media that are designed to be inexpensively distributed to an audience of a particular interest. The term zine was coined to refer to the pamphlet-sized publications that were the first self-published forms of alternative media. In the 1990s, zines gained a new meaning that was even more inclusive of the hundreds of print publications that were created by and for a community of people and that used various forms of distribution for their content. This new meaning of zine was the best way of describing an entire movement of independent media that was created outside of the traditional commercial media outlets. This movement of zines was a reaction to the sensationalism and corporate control of traditional media. This book is an overview of these zines, but it cannot be comprehensive. It is my hope that those who are interested in zines will discover some new issues of interest.
2. The Gentle Art of Making Enemies (9/10) - A very powerful song. The song starts off with a great intro, and the chorus is very powerful. The song has a cheesy sound to it, but that's what makes it great. The song plays a major role in the album, as well as a minor role in the entire Spock's Beard saga. The bass line in this song is very cool, and the keyboard part in this song is very great. 4/5
THE BEST SPOCK'S BEARD SONG EVER CREATED. Neal Morse has really brought some of his solo workhome with him on this, and i absolutely think that this is their greatest song. No criticism whatsoever (apart from maybe abit of sloppy keyboard playing), and i have listened to this song about a million time without getting bored. 827ec27edc
