If one's life and property are one's own business, and one can make a profit by one's life and property, then it is not right for others to say what one should do with one's life and property.''
The film ends with the attractive couple, Frederick and Grace, sailing away from Shanghai on a marriage cruise; they are joined by a Communist Party official who has read the book and who, like the film-makers, wishes to be happy for the first time in his life. The final scene shows that Frederick and Grace have become parents, and that the Communist Party official has become a bigamist; while he was happy on the cruise, he has returned to the Communist Party after the film.
