East Timor 1999 INTERFET/East Timor In the early hours of 22 September 1999, a combined INTERFET/East Timor force moved into Dili to support INTERFET, the multi-national force of police that had been deployed into East Timor to restore order after the controversial autonomy referendum of 30 August 1999 and the subsequent peaceful popular uprising. The INTERFET force, under the command of HQ 3 BDE, was initially deployed in and around Dili with a company from each of the Australian, US and New Zealand Battalions (a total of four companies). 3 RAR, deploying in support of INTERFET, established a base at the edge of the city and subsequently moved to the Bobonaro District on 25 September. As INTERFET continued to extend its influence into East Timor 3 RAR began to secure a number of key points around Dili, including the airport, the Swatola barracks and the Savu Sea oil terminal, which were cleared after the capture of the Savu Sea Oil Terminal by INTERFET on 1 October 1999. By 1 October, 3 RAR had taken over responsibility of parts of Dili and Bobonaro and INTERFET was in control of the major town of Taur, 50 km from Dili. 3 RAR's sub-units then moved into the Oecussi enclave, the final opposition stronghold, on 8 October. 3 RAR's role within INTERFET was to provide security of INTERFET's northern flank as well as the areas of East Timor that were under INTERFET control. Throughout this deployment INTERFET was supported by elements from a number of other Australian battalions and units. 827ec27edc
