The first thing that I noticed when I heard it was that it was by King Crimson. The second thing that I noticed was that the album sounded heavier than anything they had done before, and I was right. It was heavier than any King Crimson album that came before it. This really helped me out because I grew up listening to prog, but I had never listened to Crimson. When the album was over, I could tell that it was a different band. It was a band that was better than every band that I had heard before. Even if they were musically similar, they were still different because King Crimson was a unique band.
This news comes shortly after Crimson announced that David Cross would leave the band after touring with the group through the end of 2019. Cross, who had been a part of King Crimson since the mid-1970s, was the force behind the band’s particular brand of jazz-rock fusion. Belew, who had been a part of Crimson for the past two decades, is a producer, guitarist and composer. The band’s remaining keyboardist, Robert Fripp, has been with the group for nearly 30 years.
A post on Belew’s Facebook page reported that, due to health issues, Belew will take a break from touring to spend time with his family. He will make an album in the fall, with a live show to follow in the spring of 2020. A statement on the Facebook page also mentioned that Belew plans to tour with an ensemble of other musicians, a format it has not used in the past. (It’s not unprecedented; the album “The Power to Believe,” from 2017, featured musicians who were not part of King Crimson. Belew also toured with a band of musicians in the fall of 2019, the first time he has had the opportunity to tour with an all-new group since the mid-to-late '90s.)
