From this perspective, it is possible to claim that the evolution of the use of these technologies, in the treatment of patients, is focused on the use of smartphones. As shown in Figure 2, this is the only period of time in which all the articles have addressed some aspect regarding the use of smartphones. Moreover, in the research from 2016 up to the date of this review (the year 2022), only two articles provide some preliminary results, suggesting the use of smartphones as a tool for the treatment of patients in the future.
The second most cited article is about the development of a system to assess the tremor in Parkinson’s disease [16]. This paper was published in the year 2014 and it is, to date, the only article of the set that has not referred to the use of smartphones. This article presents a system for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease that makes use of a headset with four microphones, connected to a smartphone in order to assess the tremor of the patients. This article details the development of an app that can collect the audio signals at an accuracy of about 92% (see Table 2).
The final point is that the average quality of the studies and the number of studies per year have dramatically increased (see Figure 1). It is also possible to observe the evolution of this increase, with an average increase every year of about 10%, since 2005. This increase is comparable to the increase in the output of databases, mobile phones, desktop PC and the Internet, but in this case the evolution of the average and the number of studies, has been much more constant over the years.
The results of this overview were summarized in Table 2, which shows the two most frequent categories of use, its benefits in relation to the population, the most frequent technical terms, and the most frequently studied tasks. The findings show that, in general, the ATs are applied in the care of people with orofacial dysfunctions, including those who have experienced trauma. The benefits may be related to the reduction of the periods of silence and reduced anxiety [43] and the improvement of the quality of life and social relationships [44,45,46]. In addition, the use of ATs may help people with eating difficulties [47], reduce stress [48], strengthen the sense of self-esteem [49], improve self-esteem of carers and caregivers [50,51], improve the performance of the oral motor repertoire [52,53] and food (see for example [54,55]), and also help people to regain control of their swallowing process. However, there are two things that should be taken into consideration when applying an AT to a person.
One of the drawbacks to this approach was that we needed to recompile every time we made even a small change to the code. This slowed everything else we were doing down and because we couldn't always have someone waiting for the application to finish building. 827ec27edc
