In 2012, The Home Depot acquired a nearly 4,000-square-foot (390 m2) retail space in downtown Washington, D.C., to operate a store in the city's redeveloping Chinatown neighborhood. The Home Depot began renovations in March 2013 and opened its first Downtown D.C. store on September 17, 2014.[100] The company also operated a small store in downtown Philadelphia during the late 1990s and early 2000s.
In July 2007, The Home Depot entered into a $200 million 10-year lease to operate a major new distribution center in Macon, Georgia, under construction and scheduled to open in December 2008. By 2011, the center was completed, and by 2012, the company was operating its second largest distribution center in North America in the state of Georgia. The Home Depot stated the Macon center represented its largest single investment in the Atlanta market, and by 2015, its largest distribution center in North America.[98]
In July 2014, Home Depot opened a new distribution center in the San Fernando Valley; the facility is scheduled to accommodate deliveries of electronic items, and is expected to hire 50 people by the end of the year.[102]
On August 13, 2011, The Home Depot announced the opening of a new distribution facility in Westford, Massachusetts, that would be the company's largest in that state and would employ 600 people. On December 4, 2018, The Home Depot announced the completion of a deal to acquire the real estate and distribution company, Building Value Corporation, and the retail network that owns and operates the Belk, Kirkland's, and Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft stores. The transaction is expected to close in the first half of 2019, adding 1,300 stores and a new distribution center in the United States and Puerto Rico.
In 2016, both the Home Depot and its competitor Lowe's were named to the Dow Jones Sustainability North America Index, a ranking of home improvement retailers for their commitment to sustainability.[36]
In 2014, The Home Depot paid $5.1 million to settle a lawsuit with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) alleging that it failed to register 16 disclosure documents and filed inaccurate ones as required by the Corporate Security Officer Act. The commission said that The Home Depot had had at least two material misstatements in its registration statements. Only three of the documents were properly registered. According to the SEC, the unreported filings included documents dating back to at least 2003 that contained misleading and inaccurate information about the company's compliance with the Homeowner Bill of Rights, the company's compliance with the Homeowners Insurance Protection Act, and other issues. During the 12 months ended September 30, 2012, the company lost money from continuing operations and had stockholders' equity of $11.4 billion. The Home Depot's annual report to the SEC is due within 60 days after the end of its fiscal year, which ends on the last day of the month. 827ec27edc
