I used the StarTech converter with a USB3-to-USB2 PCI adapter and the media card reader from HP, and it worked fine... but it was a pain because it takes up a lot of space, and the media card reader and USB3 PCI adapter don't work at the same time... so I got rid of the USB2-to-USB3 adapter and used only the USB3 PCI adapter, and that works great, except you have to use a USB2 cable from the PCI adapter to the USB3 port on the motherboard (which is less than optimum if you were trying to have a USB3 hub at the back of the machine).
HP 716390-001 has a PCI-e 16 pin card edge plug with a USB3-conforming 19 pin plug fitting it. If you are like me and want the HD video quality, don't skip the HDCP protection, and have USB3 and PCI-e connectors which are not larger than the PCI-e plug (it is 16 pins, so it will fit in a 16 pin PCI-e plug) then that's the card reader you want. The USB3-to-USB2 adapter is usually a cable with USB2 connector at one end and a USB3 connector at the other, and is useful for powering the device, and to power it from the USB port of a computer that has no spare-USB3 motherboard header. You won't want to use the adapter for USB data transfers, since a cable of that sort is not good for high bandwidth transfers (we have USB1.1, USB2.0 and USB3.0+ on the Z420). But for power and data power, there is no real issue, and one or the other is not used in this case. The actual adapter I use is listed HERE. I bought this adapter and the card reader separately, and the image above with the 19 pin plug and the adapter is what I showed in the original thread.
