The film is inspired by the classic love story, Tum Se Hi. The film also features noted Hindi actor Rishi Kapoor as a cameo. The film features a musical score composed by A.R. Rahman and lyrics penned by Anand Bakshi. While the soundtrack consists of six songs, four songs were composed by A.R. Rahman alone. Some of the background music for the film is composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. The film opens in multiplexes on 30 November 2010.

In Love Story, Deol plays the love story of Siddharth Anand (Karisma) and Nandini (Priyanka). In the film, Deepika Padukone plays the character of Nandini's mother, while Karisma plays Siddharth's father. For the role of Anand's mother, Shilpa Shetty was considered for the role. As her career was stable, Shetty declined the offer. Similarly, for Siddharth's father, Rishi Kapoor was in the race. However, he too declined the offer as his career was becoming stable. Later, Deol was finally cast in the role.[39]

There was a release on DVD that came under the title of The Hero in 2003. It contained the U.S. version of the film, along with VCD and PAL-AVC The Hero (1999) and The Hero: Love Story of a Spy (2003), both of which were also remade as Western-style films. The DVD version also contained a 30-minute-long special feature with deleted scenes, bloopers, and outtakes of the film. This is not a part of the U.S. version. It also has the soundtrack. These were released by Anchor Bay Entertainment. The film was released in theatres on DVD and VCD in India on July 5, 2003 by WOW Home Video.
